What's the Proper Way Breathe While Running?

Breathing While Running

Did you know you need to breathe while running? Yep stop breathing and you'll wake up in a ditch somewhere wondering what happened.

All joking aside there are benefits to breathing "properly" while running long distances. Proper breathing consist of running in a 3:2 ratio for long distances, while running short fast distances you should use a 2:1 breathing ratio.

I'm sure some of you are wondering why? There are a few good reasons.

  • Breathing patters help you get into a rhythm
  • While breathing out you actually step down harder, and a 3:2 or 2:1 ratio alternates that hard step from foot to foot meaning less stress on a single leg.
  • Saves you money by not wearing out your shoes. Not using a 3:2 or 2:1 ratio will cause one shoe to wear out faster.

So besides keeping you alive breathing can (if done correctly) add years to your running career by dispersing the impact from one leg/foot to both legs/feet.

I know it may sound trivial and a hassle but if you just spend a few weeks reprogramming your mind and pace to run correctly you will really benefit from it in the future.
